When to pull chain in train

FACTS ABOUT CHAIN PULLING OF TRAIN COACH

Everyone is aware of the emergency chain present in every compartment of a train. It gives us safe passage in emergency. At the time of emergency,it is really impossible for one to draw the attention of the rail authority as the guard and loco pilot rooms remain at the extreme ends of the train. This time, Emergency Chain gives you the best solution. With the pulling of emergency Chain, the train can be brought into a standstill position. Besides the query that when to pull chain and when not, there are many facts regarding chain pulling. The following write-up gives an overall idea about this.

   So, let's start...

The Right Situation to Pull Chain:-

As noted earlier, Emergency Chain provides you the facility to help in emergency. There are many conditions when to pull chain . They include- if passengers drop their luggage behind or forget to carry with them, fire in train, to give more time to differently abled passengers, medical help, issue related to safety(robbery, dacoity,  etc ). Other reasons may prove valid if the concerned authority approves it.

What Makes the Train Stop When One Pulls the Chain:-
The emergency Chains are directly linked to the brake pipe of the train. The brake  air pipes store air pressure. With the pulling of chain, the air gets released and it makes the train slow down automatically. The loco pilot notices it and manually takes action to stop the train. But, definitely it takes few times  as train runs on narrow lines. Sudden standstill may lead to imbalance causing major accident.

How do they Know Who Pulled the Chain:-

With the pulling of the chain, the emergency flashers, attached to the side walls of coaches start blinking giving a signal to the recent emergency case. It only blinks in the same coach where from the chain was pulled. The loco pilot along with guard and RPF reaches there and makes an enquiry. They also fix the chain to restore the air pressure.

Punishment for chain pulling without valid reason:-
Chain pulling without answerable reasons is an offence under 141 of Indian Railways Act, 1989. How does this Act operate? If somebody intervenes between the communication between the Rail Authority and the passengers without valid reasons, he is considered guilty. He can be punished with one year imprisonment or with a fine which can be up to Rs.1000.
