Subject verb agreement. Rules and Examples.

 Subject verb agreement

In a sentence the verb agrees with the subject in number and person is called

Subject-Verb Agreement.

1. A singular subject takes a singular verb, as,

A dog barks at night.

He is a boy.

2. A plural subject takes a plural verb.

The boys are walking.

The students go to school.

Pronouns and Verbs used with them.

Am/is/are(Be verbs)- present tense

Was/were(Be verbs)- Past tense

Have/has(Have Verb)- Present Tense

Had(Have Verb)- Past Tense.


Shall/Will (Shall Verb)- Modal Verbs. 

Singular Pronouns- I/You/He/She

Plural Pronouns we/You/They 

***Subject Third person Singular verb will take 's'/'-es'.

He comes. The man goes. Etc.

Rules of Verbs' Correct Usage

Rule 1. A singular noun takes a singular verb

Examples- The girl is very intelligent.

The man is running.

Rule 2.  is used as Singular subject but it always takes a singular Verb or

plural verb.

Example-

am a boy.

I was going there.

Igo to school everyday.

I have a book.

Rule 3. You' is used as Singular/Plural subject but it always takes a plural.


You are a student.

You were running.

You have studied English.

Rule 4. Needn't & Daren't are always used in Plural form as 'Auxiliary

verb' with Singular or plural subject, as,

Examples-

He needn't go there.

He daren't touch me.

He needn't do a govt job.

He daren't oppose her husband.


Needn't &  Daren't if used as Auxiliary Verb , we should not use 'to+infinitive'

Example- He needn't attend the Class today. 

But, if Needn't and Daren't are used as main verbs, we shall use 'to+infinitive'. 

Example- He dared to face the difficulties.

He dares to go there.

He needs to put extra effort.
