A Game of Chance Introduction Class 6 NCERT English

A Game of Chance is a story about a boy named Rasheed who goes to a fair and learns the futility of playing games of chance. People love winning based on their lucks. But often times people are fooled this way. The story A Game of Chance shows how the events like lotteries and lucky winning games play with innocent People and befool them.

Every year a fair is held in the village of Rasheed on the ocassion of Eid. Tradesmen come to sell different kinds of good. Everything from a small pin to a big buffalo is available in the fair. This time Rasheed's uncle took him to the fair. A servant also accompanied them. His uncle met a few of his friends and went to spent some time with them. 

Rasheed's uncle left him and went to spend time with his friends. Rasheed and the servant, Bhaiya looked around the fair. His uncle warned him not to buy anything as he might get fooled. Seeing the display of attractive things Rasheed wanted to buy although he waited for his uncle's arrival. They took a round of the fair and stopped near the lucky Shop. It was a game of chance that could be played with only 50 paise. One had to pay 50 paise and he would get six discs, the total number of six discs would get the player an article. 

There were different people who were playing the game of chance. An old man paid 50 paise and got a beautiful clock which he was reluctant to buy. So he sold it to the shopkeeper for 15 rupees. Next a boy little older than Rasheed tried his luck and he won a comb, a fountain pen, a wrist watch and a table lamp at the end. The shopkeeper bought all these things and the boy earned a good amount of money.
 
Rasheed was very excited to play this game although his uncle warned him not to do so. Getting encouraged by Bhaiya, their servant he played the game and every time he found himself getting petty things which were not at all satisfactory for him. Rasheed won two pencils, a bottle of ink and he lost all his money winning nothing at the end. 

They came to the place where his uncle left them . Rasheed was looking upset. Seeing him upset his uncle bought him a beautiful umbrella, biscuits and sweets
and some other little gifts. His uncle explained the matter that all the winners were none but the shopkeeper's acquaintances. It was neither good nor bad luck. It was a trick to befool people and loot their money by tempting them with lucrative items. His uncle asked him to forget about it.

1. EVERY year on the occasion of Eid, there
was a fair in our village. Eid was
celebrated only one day but the fair lasted
many days. Tradesmen from far and
wide came there with all kinds of good to sell. You could buy anything from a
small pin to a big buffalo.

Word-Meaning
Occasion - purpose 
Tradesmen - businessmen 
Far and wide - from distant places. 

Explanation
Every year a fair is held in Rasheed's village on the occasion of Eid. This year too a fair was held and salesmen from different places arrived to sell items. It was a great opportunity for tradesmen to make good profit from the fair.  It was such a fair where everything from a small pin to a big buffalo was available.

2. Uncle took me to the fair. Bhaiya, who
worked for us at home, came with us.
There was a big crowd at the fair. Uncle
was leading us through the crowd when
he met a few of his friends. They wanted
him to spend some time with them.

Word-Meaning
Crowd- lots of people.
Leading - showing direction. The verb is 'Lead'

Rasheed the narrator of the story went to the fair with his uncle and Bhaiya, their servant. His uncle was showing them direction to the fair. His uncle met a few of his friends and they wanted to spend some time with him

3. Uncle asked me whether I would like
to look around the fair with Bhaiya till
he came back. I was happy to do that.
Uncle warned me neither to buy anything
nor to go too far out while he was away. I
promised that I would wait for him.

Look around- have a visit 
Warned - inform someone in advance of a possible danger, problem, or other unpleasant situation

Explanation
His uncle met a few of his friends who wanted to spend some time with him. So the narrator Rasheed stayed with their servant, Bhaiya. His uncle before going to meet his friends warned him not to buy anything as he might be fooled. Rasheed promised that he would wait for his uncle to come.

4. Bhaiya and I went from shop to shop.
There were many things I would have
liked to buy, but I waited for Uncle to
return. Then we came to what was called
the Lucky Shop. The shopkeeper was
neither young nor old. He was a middle-
aged man. He seemed neither too smart
nor too lazy. He wanted everybody to try
their luck. There were discs on the table
with numbers from one to ten facing
down. All you had to do was to pay
50 paise, pick up any six discs, add up
the numbers on the discs and find the
total. The article marked with that
number was yours.

Explanation
As Rasheed was warned not to buy anything, he and Bhaiya looked around from one shop to the other. Coming to the lucky Shop Rasheed noticed an attractive thing. The shopkeeper was a middle-aged man. On the table there were discs with numbers marked on them. One had to pay 50 paise and pick up six discs. The total numbers marked on the discs had to be calculated. And the article marked with the number of the sum total of all six discs would be the reward of the lucky winner

5. An old man paid 50 paise and
selected six discs. He added up the
numbers on them and found the total
was 15. He was given the article marked
15, which was a beautiful clock. But the
old man did not want a clock. The
shopkeeper obliged him by buying it
back for 15 rupees. The old man went
away very pleased.

Obliged - grateful 
Pleased- satisfied

Explanation
Different people were trying their luck. Rasheed saw an  old man there in the shop paying 50 paise to try his luck. He was given six discs and found the total number was 15. The article marked with the number 15 was a beautiful clock. The old was not interested in the clock, so the shopkeeper bought the article for 15 rupees from the old man. The old man was very satisfied winning 15 rupees.

6. Then a boy, a little older than I, tried
his luck. He got a comb worth 25 paise.
The shopkeeper looked neither happy
nor sad. He bought the comb from the
boy for 25 paise. The boy tried his luck
again. He now got a fountain-pen worth
three rupees. Then he tried a third time
and got a wrist watch worth 25 rupees.
When he tried again he got a table lamp
worth more than 10 rupees. The boy was
happy and went away with a smile and a
good deal of cash.

Word-Meaning
Fountain pen - a special type of pen which is very attractive. 
Good deal of cash- good amount of money.

Explanation
After the old man Rasheed found a little boy, older than him tried his luck. He was really very lucky as he won a lot of items. First he won a comb which cost 25 paise. The shopkeeper each time bought the item from the boy. Next time the boy won a fountain pen which was worth of 3 rupees. Third time he won a wrist watch worth 25 rupees. The boy again tried his luck and the last time he won a table lamp which cost 10 rupees. The boy was really very happy as won a good number of valuable items. The shopkeeper bought all these things from him and the boy was very pleased.

at Bhaiya. He encouraged me. I paid 50
paise and took six discs. My luck was
not too good. I got two pencils. The
shopkeeper bought them from me for 25
paise. I tried again. This time I got a bottle
of ink, also of little value. The shopkeeper
bought that too for 25 paise. I took a
chance for the third time. Still luck was
not with me.

The third time also Rasheed was not lucky . He won very trifle things, which of little value.

continued to try my luck again and again,
paying 50 paise each time. But every time
I got a trifle. At last I was left with only 25
paise. Again the shopkeeper showed his
kindness. He said I could either play once more with 25 paise or settle the
account then and there. I played again and
the last 25 paise also disappeared.

Explanation
Rasheed although not very lucky in this game of chance wanted to carry on trying again and again. Each time he paid 50 paise and he was left with nothing . At last when he found he was left with only 25 paise the shopkeeper asked him to play only once with the remaining money or settle the account. The remaining amount of 25 paise also disappeared and Rasheed was discouraged.

9. People were looking at me. Some were
laughing at my bad luck, but none
showed any sympathy. Bhaiya and I went
to the place where Uncle had left us and
waited for him to return.
Presently he came. He looked at me and
said, “Rasheed, you look upset. What is
the matter?

Explanation
When Rasheed won nothing valuable he was discouraged and disheartened. Everyone was busy laughing at him for his bad luck. Then they returned to place where his uncle left them. They waited for him to return. After coming, his uncle found Rasheed very upset. He could not understand the matter, so she asked the reason of his being upset.

Explanation
Rasheed was very sad as he could not win anything in the game. Bhaiya briefed the matter to Rasheed's uncle. His uncle did not show any reaction. He smiled and consoled him. He bought Rasheed a beautiful umbrella, biscuits and sweets and some other gifts so that he felt happy. After that they returned home.

Lucky Shop man had made a fool of me.
“No, Uncle,” I said, “it was just my
bad luck.”
“No, my boy,” said Uncle, “it was
neither good luck nor bad luck.”
“But, Uncle,” I said, “I saw an old man
getting a clock and a boy getting two or
three costly things.”
“You don’t know, child,” Uncle said,
“they were all friends of the shopkeeper.
They were playing tricks to tempt you to
try your luck. They wanted your money
and they got it. Now forget about it, and
don’t tell anybody of your bad luck or
your foolishness.”

Explanation
Returning home, uncle explained that the shopkeeper was very clever and he befooled Rasheed. Rasheed thought that it was his bad luck only for which he could not win something valuable. He also referred to the old man and the little boy who won valuable and costly items. His uncle explained that it was not his bad luck. The shopkeeper tempts people to play the game so that he makes the maximum profit. The old man and the little boy were the friends of the shopkeeper and it was just a trick to tempt people to earn their trust. He advised him to forget the matter and not to disclose it to anyone.

Answer: Rasheed's uncle asked him not to buy anything in his absence as he was well aware that anyone could take benefit of his innocence and he might be fooled and he might lose his money.
