About the poet Peter Dixon:
Peter Dixon is a Poet, Painter, educationist and theatre performer. He has written and published many collections of poetry, especially for children. He has acted in stage plays as he was more interested in the Theatre. He was born in London, during the times of the 'Blitz', which were a series of German bombings of London during the Second World war. He has also worked as a teacher and lecturer. As a teacher, he strived to be unbiased and did not neglect the children who were slow learners. His paintings applied bold and imaginative themes and are placed in the art galleries of London.

The poem Where Do All The Teachers Go explains the curiosity of students about their teachers. It is nevertheless true that teachers are the role model for a student. A student learns from a teacher. A child the storehouse of curiosity. As he see his teacher he grows curious about him. A teacher is a role model to a student. He believes that a teacher possesses some extraordinary qualities not present among others and he can't perceive him as an ordinary human being. So, the child wonders and becomes curious whether the teacher also behaves like others.
The child asks different questions that come in his mind out of curiosity. He asks whether teachers live in houses like others and wash their socks by themselves. Questions like whether a teacher also wears pyjamas or watches T.V. or picks his nose baffles him. A teacher always correct student's mistakes. So the student feel that teachers are infallible. They never make mistakes. As these questions bother the student all the day , he decided to follow a teacher to his home and observe his activities. He will later on record everything in a poem so that the teacher can read the poem to his students.
This poem reflects the beautiful relationship that exists between a teacher and a student. The concept of a teacher is a mystery to a child. This mystery or gap creates a sense of awe among the students. It also proves the growing dillema and curiosity that a young mind has about his teachers.

Where do all the teachers go
When it’s four o’clock?
Do they live in houses
And do they wash their socks?
Explanation:
The student is a young mind here. He has much curiosity about everything that is happening around him . He is curious about his teachers too. He wonders and wants to know about the activities of his teachers. He wants to know where do the teachers go after the school time is over that is four o clock. To a student a teacher is not an ordinary being. He is something extraordinary. So the student questions whether the teachers live in houses or not. And his mind is also puzzzled with the question whether the teachers wash their socks as he does.
As a student perceives his teacher to be someone extraordinary he can't think him doing all the things that an ordinary person does .

Do they wear pyjamas
And do they watch TV?
And do they pick their noses
The same as you and me?
Word -Meaning:
Pyjamas: a kind of cloth
Pick nose- clearing dried mucus of the nose by putting finger inside.
Explanation:
The student is puzzled with some other questions although these are very normal for an ordinary person. The student is curious whether the teachers wear pyjamas as he never finds a teacher wearing pyjamas during school time. Watching T.V or picking nose seem to be something very common activity that a teacher can't do as the student thinks. A teacher is always an extraordinary human being to a student.

Explanation:
The child is still very curious whether the teachers live with other people, i.e. they have family or not. Pinched: to steal some part
Flake: a thin layer of chocolate that is tasty.
Explanation:
Mistakes are common for all human beings. A student also makes mistakes, but he is sometimes punished by his teacher. So he questions whether the teachers never made mistakes when they were children. Chocolates are always very attractive for children. The child questions whether teachers never pinched some parts of chocolate from cake etc when they were children.

The teacher is a role model for a student. He never imagines him doing something very common and coarse.

Explanation:
The young mind of the student is already baffled with different questions. Now he wants answers to his doubts.
To overcome his curiosity he decides to follow his teacher to his home to learn what he does all through the day. After he gets his answer he'll write in a poem and the teachers can read the poem to his students.

1. Answer these questions.
(i) Why does the poet want to know where the teachers go at four o’clock?
Answer- The poet wants to know where the teachers go after four o' clock. It is due to his curiosity and mystery about his teachers. To a child a teacher is more than an ordinary human being. So his mind is curious about his after school activities.
(ii) What are the things normal people do that the poet talks about?
Answer- The young mind of the student thinks that teachers can't do what normal people do.
The normal people do some activities mentioned in the poem like- wearing pyjamas, washing clothes, picking nose, losing religious books, pinching chocolate from chocolate flakes, watching T.V., having a family, making mistakes etc.
(iii) What does he imagine about
(a) where teachers live?
(b) what they do at home?
(c) the people with whom they live?
(d) their activities when they were children in school?
Answer-
a) The student imagines if the teachers live in houses. To a student a teacher is always very mysterious.
b) The student imagines if the teacher washes his clothes or watches T.V. at home.
C)The students imagines if teacher have parents and children to live with.
d) He imagines if they ever made mistakes or lost religious hymn books and punished for that.
(iv) Why does the poet wonder if teachers also do things that other
people do?
Answer- The poet as a young child wonders if the teachers also do things like other normal people as to a student a teacher is always very curious and mysterious. A student never considers his teacher to be an ordinary human being. He is his role model.
v) How does the poet plan to find out? What will he do once he find out.
Answer-
The poet is very curious about the activities that a teacher does when he is not in school. In order to get answer to his doubts he decided to visit a teacher after the school hour and find out . And once he finds out whether the teachers do things like a common person or not he will write a poem about that.
