The Full Poem "The Kite" by Harry Behn:

How bright on the blue

Is a kite when it’s new!

With a dive and a dip

It snaps its tail

Then soars like a ship

With only a sail

As over tides

Of wind it rides,

Climbs to the crest

Of a gust and pulls,

Then seems to rest

As wind falls.

When string goes slack

You wind it back

And run until

A new breeze blows

And its wings fill

And up it goes!

How bright on the blue

Is a kite when it’s new!

But a raggeder thing

You never will see

When it flaps on a string

In the top of a tree.

Poem "The Kite" Summary Class 6 NCERT:

Let's discuss the summary of the poem "The Kite". This section will help you understand the main idea of the poem "The Kite" .

The poet starts the poem "The Kite" showing how bright a kite looks when it is new and is about to start its journey. A kite moves (dive and dip) and with every movement it creates a cracking sound. As soon as the kite gets air, it goes high up in the air as a ship goes up and down with the waves of water with the help of its sail. The sail of the kite is its tail that directs its movement. This is the upward journey of a kite.
Now, as the wind falls the kite seems to rest. As the string of the kite loosen the flier of the kite pulls the string and run until a new breeze blows his kite again. Again it goes up. The poet again repeats the line saying that the kite looks very bright when it's new. It gives a dull look in contrast as it gets trapped on the top of a tree , sometimes it gets torn too.

It snaps its tail

Word-Meaning

Bright- radiant
Dive- to plunge into water
Dip-  put something down
Snaps- makes cracking sound
Tail- the hindmost part(here the lower part of the kite)

Explanation
The poet starts the poem showing the beauty of a kite as it flies in the sky. The blue sky refers to clear sky, sky without clouds. The poet says that a kite looks very bright and beautiful when it flies in a clear sky.
It goes up and down making cracking sound.

Text
Then soars like a ship
With only a sail
As over tides
Of wind it rides,
Climbs to the crest
Of a gust and pulls,
Then seems to rest
As wind falls.

Word-Meaning
Soars- goes high up in the air.
Like a ship- the kite has been compared with a ship.
Tides of wind- rush of wind
Crest- top
Gust- flap

Explanation
With the sound made by its tail, the kite goes high up in the air . This soaring has been compared to a ship. As a ship moves on the water challenging the waves and sometimes flowing with the waves, the kite rides over the flow of wind and sometimes when the wind slows down, it seems to rest. The kite makes both an upward and a downward journey.

Text
When string goes slack
You wind it back
And run until
A new breeze blows
And its wings fill

Slack- loose

Wings- the parts/body of the kite

Explanation
When the thread or the string gets loose the flier pulls it and waits for a new breeze they helps the kite fly again. With new breeze the kite goes up in the air again.

Text
How bright on the blue
Is a kite when it’s new!
But a raggeder thing
You never will see
When it flaps on a string
In the top of a tree.

Word-Meaning:

Explanation:
The poet again emphasises on the brightenes and the beauty of the kite as it flies high up in the air. But in this process, sometimes it gets stuck in a tree and can't escape . From there it makes flapping sound and gives a dull look which is never appreciated by anyone.
