Introduction to the Poem The Quarrel Class 6 NCERT 

Sibling rivalry is very common issue in every family. Sibling rivalry means quarrel between brother and sister. This poem talks about a quarrel that ensues between a brother and a sister. Things go worse as they quarrel over petty issues. It ends strongly. Both act in rude manner until the brother acknowledges his mistake and quarrel gets over. The relationship between brother and sister is very mystic and beautiful even. Let's us enjoy the poem The Quarrel.

Quarrel or fight between brothers and sisters is a common instance in every family when it comes to sibling rivalry. The poem The Quarrel is very short thought it talks about generosity and love in relationship. 
Here in the poem The Quarrel by Eleanor Farjeon one brother and one sister engage in a quarrel over a trifle issue. Even they are unaware of the reason of the quarrel. The Quarrel began and ended without any reason. 
The poet says that she even does not know why she started quarrelling. One thing led to another and the matter became serious. 
In beginning it was very small, with time it became serious. The situation worsened. The poet asserted her righteousness whereas she knew it very well that she was wrong. From the quarrel they started hating each other. The afternoon turned black, means it was not at all cheerful. Then suddenly her brother hit him on the back and asked her to come along as it is foolish to quarrel over trifle issues. Her brother accepted his mistake saying that he was wrong. But actually he was right as he proved his generosity.

Text:

I quarrelled with my brother
I don’t know what about,
One thing led to another
And somehow we fell out.
The start of it was slight,
The end of it was strong,
He said he was right,
I knew he was wrong!

Word-Meaning:
Quarrelled: Fought/Argued
Led: Past form of 'Lead'
Fell out: To cease to be on friendly terms.
Slight: small
Right: correct
Wrong: incorrect (Opposite of 'Right')


Explanation: 
Fights grow for different reasons. Here the poet started quarrelling with her brother for a trifle issue. Initially she was not even aware of its real cause. It was a series of things for which they started fighting. On thing led to another and in this way the situation worsened. Their sweet relationship turned into a bitter one. With this trifling issue the Quarrel bacame worse. They ceased to be on friendly terms. The Quarrel started in a slight way or from a small issue although its end was very strong. Generally we find that all Quarrel starts with a trifle issue and gradually it worsens. Both of them claimed to be right. And so it turned worse. Her brother said that he was right while the narrator claimed to be right. There was no way but to make the quarrel more intense. 



Text: 

We hated one another.
The afternoon turned black.
Then suddenly my brother
Thumped me on the back,
And said, “Oh, come along!
We can’t go on all night —
I was in the wrong.”
So he was in the right.

Word -Meaning
Hated: To show hatred/resent for someone
Turned black: grew worse
Thumped: hit 
Come along: Let's fix it
Go on: continue


Explanation: 

After the quarrel started it grew worse and gradually they started hating each other. Their sweet relationship turned black or sour. They could not fix it though the matters were very small and trifle indeed. Then the course of action changed somehow. The brother of the narrator changed his mind and tried to fix it. 
He came closer to her and hit her on the back saying that it is childish to quarrel over trifle issues. He also told that it won't be right to continue the quarrel all through the night as it will only intensify the matter. 
At last the brother accepted his mistake and he came along. He humbly said that he was wrong which ultimately proved his generosity. It changed the poet as she understood her mistake. 
The matter was settled here and they came together again.

The poet Eleanor Farjeon has used a popular rhyme scheme in the poem The Quarrel. 
If we read the lines we can find that 
1. The first sentence rhymes with the third and the second sentence rhyme with the fourth. 

I quarrelled with my brother
I don’t know what about,

And somehow we fell out.
The start of it was slight,
The end of it was strong,
He said he was right,
I knew he was wrong!


The similar pattern is followed in the second Stanza also. 

We hated one another.

Literary Devices used in the Poem The Quarrel Class 6 NCERT 

Some literary devices have been used in the poem The Quarrel written by Eleanor Farjeon. This poem is included in Class 6 NCERT.

1. Metaphor:

It is an implicit comparison where two different things are compared and the comparison remains hideen. 
The sentence used in the poem
 "The afternoon turned black"
In this sentence the poet has used metaphor. 
The afternoon did not turn black rather the poet's day went bitter. 


2. Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of sound or syllable in the beginning of nearby words in a sentence .
Alliteration used in the sentence:
"start of it was slight”

3. Personification:
Personification is a literary device that is widely used in poem .
In Personification some non-living things are given the attribute of living things. Personification used in the sentence:
"afternoon turned black”
'afternoon' is non-living. It can't not turn. The poet has used Personification in order to express the feelings of the brother. 

4. Antithesis:
Antithesis is where two opposite ideas are put together.
The sentence where antithesis has been used:
"He said he was right, I knew he was wrong“, “I was in the wrong. So he was in the right.”

1. One thing led to another: From one issue they continued to another issue and this way the trouble became worse. 

2. The Start of it was slight: the quarrel started with a trifle issue and it was very small. 

3. The End of it was strong: The Quarrel although started with something very trifle, it ended strongly. The trouble was intensified. 

4. The afternoon turned black: the afternoon became morbid as they were quarrelling. They became sad. 

5. Thumped me on the back: Hit him on the back.
